A nutritionist is a professional who specializes in advising clients on matters relating to impact of food and nutrition on health. These professionals go by different terms depending on context, employment setting, and country. Some of the commonly used terms are nutrition scientist, dietitian-nutritionist, and sports, clinical, or public health nutritionist. Typically, becoming a specialist in nutrition requires one to have a bachelor degree at the minimum. Most preferably, the degree one has needs to be in food and nutrition. However, there are related fields in which one can have a degree. Entry-level nutritionists usually have bachelor degrees in courses such as Microbiology, Community nutrition, Biology, psychology, Biochemistry, anatomy, chemistry, food science, clinical nutritional care, and biology.

Higher levels of education include PhD and masters degrees. It takes four years to complete the bachelor degrees. Internship must also be completed after or during raining. They include sports nutrition, diet and disease, nutrition through lifecycle, wellness, and weight management.

A license and certification are crucial requirements before one can start practicing. Different states have different certification and licensure processes. In some states practitioners need to obtain special certification and they must renew them yearly to remain valid. In other states, practitioners need to demonstrate skills and knowledge in the field and pass a licensure exam. It is important to know state requirements before training.

After one has obtained certification and a license to practice, they can start applying for jobs. There are many different responsibilities that nutritionists are charged with in their daily work. Practitioners also work closely with other health professionals such as dietitians, general practitioners, and pharmacists. Employment opportunities are usually in the food and health industries. Some also work in the media industry.

Conducting research is one of the responsibilities of these practitioners. Researchers usually work in groups to attain specific results. Researchers may work in universities, colleges, research establishments, and companies. Academic institutions are particularly fond of employing nutritionists in their researches. As researchers, nutritionists are involved in performing clinical trials in which they have to recruit volunteers.

Nutritionists process and analyze biological samples, raise awareness on benefits of healthy eating, give talks, deliver presentations, gather statistics, and aim healthy eating campaigns at specific groups. They stay abreast with latest research in the field of nutrition so that they can educate people. These professionals also participate in programs that aim at ensuring that people have easy access to healthy foods such as vegetables and fruits.

Nutritionists work from Monday to Friday and clock over 37 hours at work every week. The job requires having excellent communication skills, good people skills, non-judgmental attitude, keen interest in healthy eating, and good evaluation and reporting skills. Nutritionists should be comfortable handling people from different backgrounds under various conditions.
