Should You Date Someone You Met In Rehab?

By Brad Chase

Men and women often find love in a treatment center. Is it ever a good idea to fall in love with someone that has had a similar addiction past as you have? Most professionals say that it is not a wise decision to fall in love with someone that has an addiction that is similar to yourself. The reason for this is that when you are feeling weak, you may actually relapse. The person that you are dating may not be strong enough to give you their support for sobriety. They may in fact go right into taking drugs and drinking alcohol with you. It is important to be sober for at least 1 to 2 years before attempting a dating relationship.

Finding love in rehab often seems like a good idea. You have probably shared a lot of intimate details about yourself during group meetings. When you are feeling alone, the person is probably there to make you feel happy. They may give you a boost of personal care. It is important to have supportive friends and family around you at all times. When you are fresh out of rehab, you are vulnerable to getting hurt. You have just started to learn more about yourself and the people around you seem to care.

When you meet someone in rehab, you are sharing a lot of yourself. You are opening your wounds and pain to people around you that are experiencing something similar as you. Addicts often find that residents in treatment centers have a similar background. They often have no problem sharing their own thoughts and views with people that care about them. Once you have love happening, you want to hold onto that love for a long time to come. It is important to develop friendships and not love relationships. If you are used to being involved with someone, then this can be a hard task to do. However, try to discipline yourself to learn more about yourself.

When we learn more about ourselves, we see love and care. We see happiness inside of our lives and a whole new outlook on life. We begin to feel like our life is growing closer to someone. We should keep a good connection with our family and friends. It is a good idea to tell your family about the guy/girl that you met in rehab and ask them what they think. Family members will often tell you their real opinion. It is important to get things sorted out for your life in new ways.

It is important to think about yourself first in rehab. The reason why you are there is to self-reflect and focus on changing your life. Until you are comfortable with your new sober living lifestyle, it is wise to stay single for at least 1 year. Most experts agree that staying single for at least 1 to 2 years is better for your sobriety. The reason for this is that most people go back into taking drugs and drinking alcohol when they feel unwanted or not cared for. Most addicts that break up with a boyfriend/girlfriend find it easier to slip back into taking illegal substances.
