The Wild Horse Of Fear

By Evan Sanders

Fear. It grips us. It can literally paralyze us completely and make us freeze in a moment. Anyone that says that fear isn't really an element in their life is either lying or they are not pushing the envelope remotely. Fear, for those that are truly alive, presents itself daily. Of course this is hard to address at certain times but we do have the ability to make decisions in face of fear. That moment, the instant we choose to move onward in spite of what is really challenging us, is a wonderful demonstration of bravery.

How can you really start to work with fear run from it, cast it away, or try and block it out absolutely?

We must work with our emotions instead of hiding from them.

Maybe that's simpler to say than to do, but over a period you become even more skilled in working with your emotions instead of avoiding them absolutely.

Experientially avoiding your emotions is an absolute prison cell and you will do even more damage than good in taking part in it. What ends up happening? Possibly one of the worst situations you can personally get yourself into - you become numb. I believe we have all been there from time to time and stayed in some place where we cannot feel anything. This is not the worst thing in the world, but the things that people do after they are numb are actually dangerous.

We start going down the path of compromising on our deepest foundations just to feel again, and with a never-ending list of things that serve as great temptaitons in this life, things can begin to get pretty messsy.

I've been there, I've seen plenty of other people go there, and unfortunately it really is something that's going to continue on and on until you make a change in your perspective about how you cope with fear.

When you try to cage the wild pony of fear up, it will make efforts to tear everything apart it can.

But if you let that fear out and allow it to buck and play in the pasture, finally it will tire itself out and calm down to something much more manageable. Don't constrict under fear. Instead, try and soften as much as possible. Breathe. Relax. Watch fear dance around you and let it do what it has to do.

If you can do this, you may put yourself in a far more powerful place to pick a choice beyond fear rather than being stuck in it.
