The Need For Neuropsychological Testing

By Nancy Gardner

There are various ways getting a definite diagnosis and finding whether a person has problem with the brain. Neuropsychological testing can help understand whether someone has been affected and what they have to do next in order to improve. Sometimes there is no way of out, but often one can look into various methods, such as medication and therapy.

Different parts of the brain may be problematic, so it is not always the case that the patient will be severely affected. They may be suffering with memory problems or something to do with the emotions. This all depends on the brain that has been damaged in one way or another. Of course, there is chance for improvement.

A person who is affected in one way will be able to cope in a work situation, but emotionally they may struggle. On the other hand, some people may struggle with short term memory loss. This can interfere with all aspects of life. Cognitive therapy and other types of therapy which are related to brain injury are recommended for this, but one should realize that it is a slow process.

Tests that neuropsychologists use are approved by a body of psychologists which have been designed. These type of psychologists all use the same type of testing in order to find out what the issue is. They are designed in various formats with symbols and multiple type questions. They are designed to be very basic.

Emotions can also be affected and this may not always show up on the test, but other things will that show which part of the brain was affected. Someone who is having problems with emotions will need therapy. They will suffer with relationships and will often show signs of moodiness, which is common.

This type of psychologist is much in demand because there are few of them around. They also have to train any other type of therapist, and not all of them have the right type of experience. They work a lot at hospitals with neurologists. For example, someone with epilepsy may be having a brain operation to remove a specific part of it. The psychologist will have to assess this and report back to the neurologist.

A neurologist often needs a therapist like this to assess patients who are about to undergo brain surgery. They will also need to be analyzed after the operation. After a couple of months the patient is tested again in order to make sure that there are improvements in the brain. Right after an operation, one will find that there are still complications.

Neurologists need these therapists to help them assess their patients before they are about to do brain surgery and when they have completed their work. They will also keep in contact with the patient and re-evaluate over a couple of months, taking note of the changes. For example, people who have surgery because of epilepsy will be tested to find out whether there is memory loss as a result of their surgery.
