Strategies to understand ebola pathogen proteins

By Alfred Obi

When taking a look at a pathogen it is important to grasp the proteins that make up its essential components. The Ebola virus proteins contain basic components for 7 different types of proteins. The tactics that these proteins function is part of what makes the Ebola pathogen so deadly.

The Ebola virus proteins share functions with one or two other sorts of viruses. The most virulent of these viruses is the HIV virus. This similarity is thankfully limited to the glycoprotein or surface of the Ebola pathogen. The function that it performs is making the immunity mechanism blind to the pathogen so it can continue its path of destruction through the body.

These similarities in the Ebola pathogen proteins are permitting scientists to look for cures in similar viruses. Looking at the protein structure of the pathogen enables scientists to attempt to find how to deconstruct the proteins in the search for a cure. Understanding the cell structure of the virus is often the key to knowing the best way to unmake the pathogen.

When taking a look at the protein structure scientists are commonly taking a look at the glycoprotein. This is because of the fact that the closeness to the surface of the bacteria makes it accessible to natural antibodies. This makes it the best target for any cure that would aid the bodies own immunological system. Due to this much research is being concentrated on this actual protein.

The biggest problem for understanding the protein structure of any pathogen is the changing jobs of proteins. With limited room within their genomes viruses frequently have proteins that perform multiple roles. This makes it difficult to isolate or deconstruct the protein as scientists have to account for all possible mixtures of protein usage.

In the fight against ebola the building blocks contained within the virus' proteins may hold the answer to the cure. Understanding the way these proteins interact and their purposes can give us more understanding to the virus. Current research that focuses on these proteins is busily making an attempt to develop drugs and other treatments to handle this dangerous virus.
