LGBTQ Parent Support San Rafael CA Organization

By Arthur Russell

Locating support for parents of those in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer community, can often be difficult. While this is the case, there are local and national support groups of this nature. A good example of this kind of group is that of the lgbtq Parent support san rafael ca group.

Lack of support in some areas is due to a lack of a regular place to meet. Whereas, in others it can be due to the conservative nature of cities, towns and states in the region. When this is the case, it is more important than ever that those in need of support come together and create a local network.

While PFLAG stands for parents for lesbian and gay individuals, these groups are often inclusive of all parents of those recognized under the LGBTQ umbrella. While this is the case, these and other groups whom have held on to original titles still fail to recognize bisexual, transgender and other members of the community. As such, it is up to current members to create more equality by suggesting a name change which is inclusive of all those whom identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community at large, whether friend, ally, member, staff or volunteer.

Even though all may be welcome to groups which only include lesbian and gay in the name, there are many whom shy away from these groups due to not feeling recognized, represented or visible. Individuals whom feel this way can often propose a name change. In doing so, those whom have a strong argument as to how and why doing so will impact the group in positive ways are often going to be more successful than others.

While there may be opposition when it comes to proposing a name change to an existing group, individuals with the power, strength and ability to do so are often the best chance when it comes to making progress in this area. As a result, those whom are successful often gain a great deal of respect and appreciation from others in the group, many whom may have been feeling left out for years.

When groups are inclusive of all individuals whom identify with the LGBTQ+ community, it is proof that a great deal of progress has been made over the years. In fact, even if a group simply changes a name as is the case with the Boston Gay Pride Committee to be more inclusive of all community members, friends and allies, it can be a welcome change.

There can also be differing opinions among people working for the same goal. For example, not everyone serving on the Boston Gay Pride Committee agreed with regards to changing the name of the committee. In fact, it took a few years and the bisexual serving on the board as media coordinator and secretary/treasurer before those on the committee whom agreed voted to change the name to the Boston Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Committee.

Individuals who can hold office positions such as President, Secretary-Treasurer, Media Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator and others often have more clout when it comes to wanting to be recognized. As such, if individuals whom are feeling left out of a group whether in name or practice can work in one of these positions, it can often go a long way in becoming successful when promoting various changes and ideas.
