Exercises And Games For Dementia Patients

By Elaine Guthrie

Dementia is common among the old people. The disease is not fatal as it only affects parts of the brain such as response system and cognitive functions. The patients experience loss of memory, less mind and body coordination and loss of reasoning power. Workouts and games greatly improve these conditions but first they should visit a physician who will advise them on the best works and games for dementia patients.

The behavior among the patients can be reduced if the out-patients are able express themselves thorough music, art or any other medium. Below are some tips that the patients can engage in and it will help with their condition.

They should engage in aerobic exercises. These exercises not only improve the general health but also increase blood flow, strengthen the muscles, and improve the immune system. Depending on the fitness level, they can take around ten to thirty minutes of exercise. If the condition improves, the patients can increase the time taken in doing the exercises. These exercises include jogging, cycling, and physical activity that revitalizes the heart and lungs.

Weight training is something that the patient can engage in. The dementia patient can lift weights to increase metabolism and build lean muscle and fat. The lifting helps in controlling the blood sugar levels especially for those who suffer from diabetes. Diabetes affects a dementia patient strongly than they do to normal people. They can lift weights two or three times a week.

Flexibility and balance is at times difficult for the old people. They spend most of their times sited doing nothing. Their bones do not stretch much compared to people who work, as they have to move from one place another. The patients should start with simple routine exercises done weekly. The other advantage is that the can do them inside the house as they do not have to visit the gym. In your house, anybody can easily stretch bend and even do Tai chi.

There are numerous things that dancing does to people, the young, and the old alike. First, it involves movement of the body parts. As we move, we stretch the muscles and the bones, the more we do it the flexible we become. We lose weight and improve the circulation of blood through the veins thus blood is constantly supplied to the brain cells.

Dementia is a problem in the brain and mostly affects the cognitive functions and the memory. The good thing with exercise is that it gives result at a faster rate than drugs do. Even though the person has to continuously do the exercises, it is better than always buying drugs.

Games and exercise should not however be thought to as hard as if they will participate in competition. The patient need to do simple routines every day and their heath the will greatly improve. This means they can choose to walk around the house and just stretch even as they sit down. This is not hard and if they still have the strength, they can choose to visit the gym occasionally. The games and activities also help reduce boredom and keep their mind occupied. Anyone experiencing such a condition should not be reluctant to try out the exercise as there is much to be gained.
