Hot flashes are a common symptom of menopause and almost three quarters of women are affected by this symptom. Typically women can have hot flashes from six months to five years after or during menopause. In order to gain relief, there are some over the counter remedies for hot flashes that could help you treat your symptoms in an effective manner.

As the name suggest, hot flash gives you a sudden feeling of intense heat and you will feel as if your heart is pounding faster than before. Your fingers might start tingling and your body feels warm to touch. Your face would become red and sweating occurs frequently. Depending on the severity of the hot flashes you might feel all the symptoms or just a few of them.

Hormonal changes within the woman's body trigger these flashes to a great extent. Their intensity vary from one person to another because some women hardly notice such change occurring while others are affected severely. In order to avoid these triggers you could change a few things and it could help you to a great extent. For instance, reduce your consumption of spices, alcohol and caffeine.

If you smoke, wear skin tight garments, live in hot and humid conditions and feel stressed all the times than you might feel these triggers more often than usual. Try to change your living conditions and lead a healthy lifestyle as it could help you to a great extent. Only small and minor changes could bring about a great difference in your health and well being.

Before taking any medications, you could start off by making simple changes to your lifestyle and if they work, you might not even need to take medications at all. Try drinking ice water when you think your feeling the symptoms. You could also keep an ice pack near you just in case you need it, Try to wear cotton clothes during the night and all your bedding should be hundred percent cotton.

Herbal medicines and oils are said to have a positive impact on reducing such symptoms but there are no scientific evidences that could back up this statement. But from personal experience, many women have expressed that they really did benefit from oils and herbs. Black Cohosh is regarded as one of the most popular herbs in this regards but if you suffer from a liver diseases its better not to take this herb.

Its important that you consult your doctor before consuming any herbal medications because they might bear certain side effects which could harm your body in the long run. Although most of these herbs and oils are harmless but its better to be safe rather than be sorry later. As long as you're not orally taking any herbs, they are good for you.

In some cases, you might not even need over the counter medications provided you are willing to make changes to your current lifestyle. Eat good diet, stop consuming unhealthy food products exercise on a regular basis and try to keep yourself calm and happy all the times so that you don't feel stressed anymore. If you smoke, stop smoking completely because it is not good for your health overall.
