Staten Island Pediatrics: How Healthy Are Sports Drinks?

By Bob Oliver

What are some of the most common reasons why people take to sports drinks as opposed to water? Not only do they have taste but the truth of the matter is that with such components as electrolytes and carbohydrates, being refueled is not exactly the most difficult endeavor. However, there are concerns to consider with sports drinks and those in Staten Island pediatrics will be able to tell you the same. In order to have a better idea of what these drinks entail, read on.

According to an article on Medical News Today, sports drinks have the possibility to lead to unhealthy habits if consumed enough. The article stated that research data was gathered by 2,793 teens, across a number of 20 schools in the Minneapolis area. Not only did the data entail how much they consumed in terms of sports drinks but the time spent watching television, playing video games, working out, and what have you. Staten Island pediatrics can attest to the fact that health can be affected through various endeavors.

After the study was wrapped up, the article mentioned that boys who consumed sports drinks were one who also allocated around 4 hours of video game time during each week. In addition, they spent an hour watching TV. While these are interesting points to note, what's even more intriguing is that these adolescents were linked to higher sugar intake - as could be imagined - and higher rates of smoking. It's clear that sports drinks can cause problems, which means that other options should be considered.

Perhaps the best example - and medical authorities like GPM Pediatrics will be able to support this point - is water. Staten Island pediatrics understand the importance of water and how it is safer by comparison to the most common sports drinks. It can be argued that these drinks can hydrate the body but apart from that, there isn't much to be said about their nutritional value. It's not like they aid the body with added vitamins and nutrients, so there's no point to choose other options over water.

Even if you are someone who spends ample time in the field of athletics, there are far better options to keep you going than sports drinks. While water may be seen as the most typical option, it is commonly viewed as one of the best. It is worth noting that since more than half of the human body is made up on water, this type of beverage should be a given. In order to maintain a strong level of health in the long term, it's hard to deny the impact that water can have.
