By Candy Casty

Medical billers and coders need to know a lot of information in order to code correctly. Inputting data is what goes on in the life of a coder on a daily basis. In order to accomplish this task, it's important to keep up to date books on codes.

Some books that you would need in billing are: CPT Code books, ICD code books, ICD9 billing code books and HSPCS code books. Each book has a different meaning. It is important to become familiar with these books because you will be reading them on a daily basis.

Every great biller is someone that must become familiar with the ICD system. We are now working with ICD-10 codes and there are over 100,000 of them that you must become familiar with over the course of your career. You must also enjoy documenting a patient's success. There is a lot that goes into billing now a days.

What do all of the acronyms mean? CPT stands for current procedural terminology. ICD stands for international classification of diseases. HSPCS stands for healthcare common procedure coding system. All of these books are helpful for people that need to learn more about the medical billing industry. There is always something new to learn.

ICD books are a little bit different. ICD stands for the International Classification of Diseases. This is an international system that puts related diseases together. It is mainly used to record medical diagnosis. The 9th revision was used for the ICD9 coding system.

Billing code books list diagnosis both numerically and alphabetically. They are great for finding out information quickly. The codes are updated every single year. It is helpful to own this book because they contain information to properly diagnose any illness. You will find that these books are great to read when you are at home.

HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System identifies products services and supplies that are not in the CPT codes. This can be orthotics, ambulance services and medical equipment. These books are often looked up as a necessary part of the medical billing process. It is good to become familiar with them. Over time, you will find your success.

A medical biller is someone that has taken time out to study. If you love the medical industry and really don't want to be a nurse or doctor, then this is a perfect career. I know lots of billers that spend their entire lives working in the industry. You will never be bored as a medical biller in any way, shape or form.
