What Are The Factors That Make A Good Drug Education Program?

By Dorothy Watson

Young people are getting exposed to things that facilitate alcohol and substance abuse. They get the idea that rich and successful people often use these substances to deal with the amount of stress they are facing in their everyday lives. They can see it in magazines, televisions and social media platforms. What they do not realize is that these drugs eventually expose them to risk factors that are likely to affect their performances in school and their relationships with friends and relatives. As a result, they need to be educated through a good drug education program to enable them to change their views.

Dealing with young people is not an easy affair. Most of them tend to withhold information so that they avoid getting judged by others. A good facilitator needs to provide a safe haven for such an individual to share their problems with them. You should engage the student in a meaningful conversation so that they can get an idea on the risk factors. It will be an achievement if the individual makes their own decision to avoid the habit.

The best learning tool would be use off audio visuals. They tend to give the student metal image of what an addicted person goes through. They are presented in forms of DVDs and written materials to facilitate the prevention of the use among the youth. Use of humor is encouraged to make the sessions livelier.

Volunteers and education workers formed an association known as Youth, Ownership and Understanding (YOU) in 2011. The participants are taken through a prevention program that lasts up to 8 weeks. The most a volunteer can do is to explain their experiences while they were using the drugs and how they got out of this bondage.

These programs often target schools since they are likely to find students there. They will conduct studies by interviewing them. What they have discussed will act as findings for the next subject matter to be discussed during the forum. Once they are certain on the findings, they can use it to explain the current situation.

Depending on what they find, they shall be able to observe the next move by the affected persons. Theirs is to advise the affected person to change their direction and to prevent others from engaging in the dangerous habit. They will ensure that the person makes independent choices on their own through these mentorship programs.

Even though coming out of a habit is difficult, the facilitators ensure that they include activities that are meant to divert their attention. They realize that young people who have no goals in life become bored and may end up using the drugs to evade boredom.

Even though the government is working hard to prevent the distribution of drugs into the country, people need to become responsible by avoiding them at all costs. They need to ensure that they avoid situations that may encourage the use so that this vice can be eradicated. That way, they are making the world a better place to live in.
