Learn About The Various Cosmetic Anesthesia Used

By Brian Meyer

Cosmetic procedures are increasingly becoming popular more so due to new advancements and techniques coming up in plastic surgery. Prior to the procedure, a patient needs to first consider the sedation preferred by the surgeon. The surgeon uses the most appropriate cosmetic anesthesia, depending on the level of surgery. What is important is that a patient should not feel anything during the process. At the same time, different anesthetics can be used with the different types of plastic surgery.

First, local anesthetics are the highly preferred when carrying out plastic surgeries. It is more appropriate when making smaller bumps and lumps. This anesthetic prevent the patients from feeling pain in the area where the surgery is being performed. When employed, patients stays awake in the entire procedure. The anesthetic can be used by physicians to numb specific area such as when stitching or filling teeth by the dentists. So as to reduce anxiety some anti-anxiety medications can be given.

Secondly, the surgeon can use minimal sedation. This is performed by giving anti-anxiety medications and pain relievers by mouth to the patient. These medications are given half an hour before the surgery procedure together with a good local anesthetic. Once used a patient remains sleepy and relaxed the entire procedure. It can be utilized for eyelifts, scar revisions, lip lift and small area liposuction.

Minimal IV sedation is also another choice that can be used in plastic surgery. This is just a step higher than minimal sedation. It is suitable for patients who are not sure they can tolerate local anesthetics but want to be sure they will be comfortable during the procedure. It is very suitable for patients who are too anxious.

Surgeons can also use twilight sedation also known as IV sedation. Medications are also given to ensure the patient forget the entire process. The sedation may also be referred as a conscious anesthetic since a patient breathe on his own while still asleep. In the case of some pain, the patient can show some movements, moan or verbalize. It can be employed in facelifts, breast reduction as well as facial implants.

A surgeon can also give a deep IV sedation when performing plastic surgery. Patients breathe on their own but they may require assistive devices. This form of anesthetic is suitable for major body lifts and plastic surgeries. With this anesthetic, the patient hardly feels pain or recall the procedure.

The last type of sedation that can be used for cosmetic procedures is the general anesthetic or sedation. With this type of anesthetic, the patient needs respiratory support. General anesthetic has known risks and problems. For instance, a patient may have nausea and prolonged recovery period. It may also increase the surgery time. However, nausea and prolonged recovery time are eliminated by IV sedation.

Among the highly preferred form of sedation of the ones outlined above, use of local anesthetic is more preferred over general sedation. This is because, a local anesthetic is safer, less risky and has a short recovery period. Local anesthesia allows a patient to stay relaxed and comfortable during the entire procedure. Consequently, if you reside in Rome, GA, it is possible to have cosmetic surgery performed using local anesthetics.
