By Kurt Saniel

The thyroid gland is a large endocrine gland which has important functions in the human body. It makes proteins, determines how fast the body uses energy and controls sensitivity to other hormones within the body. When it is dysfunctional a Las Vegas Thyroid Doctor will be able to help.

This gland may be dysfunctional due to congenital anomalies. Other causes include cancer or non-cancerous nodules, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism or a condition known as thyroiditis. There are additional disorders that may be affecting this gland.

Endocrinology is the field of medicine that deals with these conditions. But, a primary care physician is perfectly capable of providing care for many of these anomalies. Many of the endocrinologists focus their practices on reproductive matters and diabetes.

Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is overactive. This abnormal condition speeds up the metabolism. It causes sudden weight loss, tachycardia and an irritable disposition among other symptoms.

Other symptoms that occur are altered menstrual schedules, sweating, an excessive number of bowel movements, thin skin and brittle hair. The condition is difficult to assess. In senior citizens there may be an absence of any symptoms. Some medications prevent an evaluation.

One uncommon condition that definitely requires an endocrinologist is thyroid cancer. Due to the small number of cases, not all of these doctors have experience caring for this condition. It is important to find one who has that experience.

The same is true for Graves disease or thyroid nodules. If you require surgery for any thyroid related disorder, find a surgeon who has maximum experience in performing these kinds of operations. A pregnant woman or child with a thyroid condition should definitely seek care from an experienced professional.

Many thyroid conditions are cared for competently by your primary physician. For some reason the number of doctors focusing on endocrinology conditions is small. This may be due to the low number of people needing that type of care.
