In simplest terms, a sommelier is an individual who specializes in wine. However, with a term that is so general, you may be curious as to what exactly a sommelier is able to offer to any dining establishment. Not only is a sommelier able to help suggest the best wines available but there are a number of specifics associated with this. In order to best understand what an effective sommelier should have, make note of these 3 pertinent qualities.

Keep in mind that a sommelier, as a wine expert, must be able to understand what helps to differentiate different types from one another. For example, what if you are the kind of individual who enjoys red wine for its many benefits? Chances are that you will be able to learn about this beverage's phosphorous content, which can benefit the bones. White wine, on the other hand, seems to be geared towards keeping the human heart as young as possible for much longer.

You must also be able to recommend certain types of wine to your customers. This is cemented in the idea of customer service, which is another factor that a sommelier should have to a high degree. Keep in mind that you are going to interact with many different customers, so it's important to present your best personality. In addition, when you speak with confidence, as you know what you are talking about, those who will order the wine will be more confident to take your word at face value.

There is also the matter of food pairing that any sommelier can carry out. Keep in mind that due to the various tastes associated with food and wine alike, this is not a mix-and-match situation; certain combinations are able to product satisfying results. For example, a white wine can work well with a savory fish such as salmon. On the other hand, red wine seems to be tailor-made for the purpose of heavier foods, beef being one of the best examples. Without question, sommeliers recognize the importance of wine and how it should be paired with certain foods.

I do not think that anyone can argue with the fact that a sommelier is able to handle him or herself in the culinary arts. It's important to note that wine itself is a rather complicated subject, able to open up a forum for discussion to be made. Not only should you, as a budding sommelier, be able to understand what every wine offers but how exactly it can be paired with various foods. The more time you spend learning about wine, the more committed you'll be to becoming the best sommelier possible.
