The malts are broken down through a process called malting to increase the surface area for the action of yeast.

The malting process is completed in two steps. Firstly, the grains are soaked in water for about two days so that they can germinate. The germination produces the required enzymes which facilitate the breaking down of this malt. The second step of malting entails drying the germinating grains. As soon as the grains start to germinate, they are taken into an oven where they are dried. The extent of drying, as well as the temperatures of the oven, dictates the color and the type of the beer brewed.

Another ingredient which plays a significance role is the hops. They are included in the mix to produce the bitterness required in this beer. Hops are just the flowerlike cones of the climbing vine. In the center of every hop cone, there are small glands containing oil and resins which contribute aroma, flavor, and bitterness to the product.

The time taken to boil the hops dictates the level of degree of bitterness. The longer the boiling, the stronger the bitterness. There are several types of hops. And each type has specific characteristics. This, therefore, means that each variety adds something unique to the beer. It has been found that the variety of hop used in brewing influence the demand and thus the cost of this brew.

Water is the key ingredient as it provides the medium for mixing all the three named ingredients. The Brewers need to know the techniques in which water should be mixed to produce the best brew. In general, the water used must be safe for drinking and of good quality.
