Lawrenceville Chiropractor Uses Spinal Adjustments To Alleviate Slipped Disc Pain

By Lonnie Hahne

The condition called slipped disc is a herniation of one of the intervertebral discs that separate the spinal vertebrae. In their normal state they serve to cushion these bones from impacting each other as the person moves. When a disc is herniated it causes pain by pressing against a nerve root. Individuals in pain turn to a Lawrenceville GA chiropractor office for help to alleviate it.

Each disc is made up of a strong fibrous outer shell and a softer, gel-like substance within that shell. The nerves emerging from the spinal cord serve to activate the entire body. When a disc is prolapsed, a portion of it bulges out between two of the vertebrae. It presses against a nerve causing great pain.

This condition affects twice as many men as women. The age of onset is ordinarily between thirty and fifty years old. The cause is not always clear. It may be due to an inherent weakness in the disc, lifting heavy objects at work or obesity.

Make an appointment with the chiropractor to discuss all possibilities. You will have your spine examined and a range of motion assessment done. You will discuss the pain in detail, how long you have had it, if it is constant and how severe it is. Only after an evaluation is done can a care plan be recommended.

The primary care may be spinal adjustments to correct a misalignment of the vertebrae. The subluxation, or misalignment, causes pressure against one or more nerve roots. Your care plan will be devised to suit your specific needs.

An adjustment is done by applying a controlled thrust to the part of the spine that needs realignment. A lower force technique is used for some clients who are older or smaller. This is a technique called spinal mobilization.

A series of office visits are required to administer the adjustments. You can expect the pain to be reduced incrementally with each session. In most cases six to ten sessions will bring the pain to a manageable level. You can plan a return to work and other activities you enjoy.
