Creating The Best Patient Handouts

By Stella Gay

As professionals in the medical world, it is your job to make things simpler for those who are sick. Begin with the handouts that would make them aware of what they have to go through. This would prepare them for the worst. When that happens, then you can expect them to be calm in the operating table.

First of all, you will have to gain the content that a sixth grader will understand. That is because the patient handouts that you will be building are not for professionals for you. They will mostly be for the less fortunate who are terribly sick at the same time. This is the main reason why simplicity is a must.

Second, if you can make all of your words to never go beyond two syllables, then that will be great. However, you are still free to go beyond that if you see the need to. In that case, your content will never look awkward. What is important in here is that it will remain brief so that people can get back to their own lives.

Third, you need to be familiar with bullet forms. However, that does not mean that you will already be writing in fragments in here. Complete sentences are still required since the approval of your superior awaits at the end of the line. If you cannot get the approval, then you will have to start all over again.

List down the most vital points of the disease which has been assigned to you. Start with the most basic ones. If there is a point in the complex category that is worthy to be shared, then you can make an exception in here. Just try to be comprehensive as much as possible since you only have a limited amount of space.

You would also have to proceed with the treatment procedures immediately. Give these people a glimpse on the things that they can expect to happen to them. Never write anything that is not true. These people have already accepted the fact that they are sick which means that the cure is what they are seeking now.

Have a list of points that is arranged based on importance. If you will conduct that step, then you can help in the memory retention of your patients. They will not forget the little things that they have to do to ease up their condition before they have to go through a medical operation.

You would have to avoid all of those medical jargons. Keep in mind that you would be writing for ordinary people and not to your former classmates in medical school. So, try to write like you have never studied medicine and consult the members of your family with the final output.

Overall, you have to think more like your patients in the coming days. Determine the things that you want to know from a piece of paper. That is how you can be successful with this medical project of yours.
